Ever since I started collage art with mulberry paper several years ago, I have been focusing on mixed media work that utilizes pigments from different sources, various threads and fabrics, paper-cranes, etc. I have also been doing experiments that emphasize texture using such materials as marble powder, gypsum, and sand.

When I do my experimental work of tearing and manipulating mulberry paper along its grain, I create a variety of spaces formed by lines of different thickness and the connection of these lines. These spaces appear as if they are breathing through human alveoli. This similarity is an exciting surprise to me as I am a pathologist who has lived with the mysteries of human cells all my life.

I intend to create spaces of communication that connect all of us through my collage work.

I will continue experiments where I express a vibrating energy flow on canvas by repeating creation, overlapping, and erasing of lines – lines that indicate various emotions and actions accumulated through my own life experiences.

My experimental collage work is one kind of performance art. It represents a challenge that boldly and actively expresses emotions difficult to describe in words and at the same time a challenge that leads the artist into freedom.

닥종이의 가능성을 두 손과 온 몸으로 만지고 느끼는 콜라쥬작업을 시작한 이래, 다양한 원천에서 나오는 물감, 각종 실이나 헝겊, 종이학 등을 캔버스에 붙이는 mixed media 작업에 수년간 천착해왔다. 또한, 대리석가루, 석고, 모래 등 각종 소재를 사용해서 반입체적 엠보싱(굴곡과 흐름)이 있는, 질감을 강조하는 실험도 끊임없이 해왔다.

특히나 닥섬유를 결에 따라 뜯고 만지면서, 다양한 굵기의 선과 이들이 연결되어 만들어지는 다양한 공간들은 흡사 인체의 폐포(alveoli)를 통한 들숨, 날숨과 비슷한 양상을 보여 주는 것 같았다. 인체의 각종 세포들의 신비를 함께 한 삶을 살아온 의과대학 병리학과 교수로서, 이 동질성은 놀라운 것이었다.

우리는 매일 숨을 쉬는 과정을 거듭하면서 사람과 사람사이를 이어주는 망조직속에서 서로 소통하며 삶을 영위하고 있다. 나의 실험적인 콜라쥬 작업을 통해, 서로가 연결되는 우리들의 소통의 공간을 만들고자 한다.

수 많은 삶의 경험을 통한 희로애락같은 다양한 감정과 행위들을 시사하는 선의 생성과 중첩, 소멸을 반복하여, 요동치는 에너지의 흐름을 화폭에 옮기는 나의 실험적인 작업은 계속 될 것이다. 이는 일종의 행위 예술로, 작가를 자유로움 속으로 이끌어 내어, 언어로서는 표현하기 어려운 다양한 심성을 과감하고 적극적으로 표출하는 도전인 것이다.
